One trick that I've read about is creating a couple of small mats embedded with carpet tacks that you can place strategically about the boat in common entry points to deter thieves. Then you can roll up the mats when not needed.
Reminds me of Costa Rica where all the houses are covered in iron bars. Good people at heart, just so poor, they're always on the lookout for "stuff" just "lying around" that they can "find" and sell. That's why only the light scares them away. They don't want to hurt anyone (like me, they're pretty much allergic to prison-ass). No need for knives.
Another adventure within the adventure! Some other deterrent devices I've heard of yachties using include low-tec stuff like trip lines connected to buckets, jars of shells/metal, some even purchase bird-scare gas guns too. In that part of the world most unwanted visitors tend to be opportunistic rather than malicious. All the best for the next chapter.
Yep, you're right about them being opportunistic. Most people just see a yacht and think WEALTH, no matter the size of shape of the boat. But because of this they scare off easily. We did rig up a trip wire also that turns on the decklights and a siren. Hopefully we never encounter the types that are after more or mean real harm.
Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a comment and watching the video!
What a cool journey; made even better by great video and production. Please keep documenting your adventures so that rest of can continue to dream of doing the same thing one day.
Delos crew, I've been binge reading the blog for the past 6 weeks and just read your latest entry... and now I can't sleep! Thank you for inspiring me to "see" a different future for myself. Keep giving away the Delos spirit.
Awesome Eric! It's really our pleasure to share this amazing adventure, and thank you so much for letting us know you enjoyed it. For you to get something out of it as well really means a lot to us. Fair Winds, and stay tuned :) More coming! Brian S/V Delos
