Crew

Brian was born on Wednesday the 24th of March 1976, he was raised in the small city of Flagstaff, Arizona. At the age of 22 Brian moved to Seattle to finish his degree in Electrical Engineering at UW.  With his bright mind and witty smile Brian started up his own company.

After years in the business Brian dreamt of bigger adventures and more meaning in his life. He read the book “3 years on a 12foot boat” and the dream to create his own odyssey and sail around the world was born. Three boats later and endless days of hard work, Brian’s dream became a reality when he bought Delos in Seattle in 2008 and has lived on board ever since.

Brian is not just a splendid captain but Delos’ all round handy man. Lucky for the crew he is an exceptional electrician, water fixer, computer engineer, energy mechanic and bread maker. His stubborn nature means he is persistent with all projects and won’t stop until he gets the task done. Brian radiates an aura of confidence which automatically creates a sense of trust and safety for anyone who comes into contact with him.

Although a software nerd at heart, he has a weird fixation with strong tastes, is the ultimate snuskhummer and a true and loving sailor.

His name is Brady.  Yep, that’s right, just like that old classic The Brady Bunch.  He’s a keen-as sailor and a cracker-jack diver.  He’s lived and sailed on Delos since 2010 after hopping on in Mexico.  He was only supposed to come for a month to help sail to Tahiti, but somehow those months slipped on by and now its three years and twenty something thousand miles later. And he’s still loving it.  Obviously he was meant to live on the ocean so Delos is the perfect place for him.

Not only is Brady a Dive Master, Dive Instructor, and Rescue Diver but he can also whip up a mean Pico De Gallo or Ceviche, all while filleting a Tuna or Mahi with the other hand.

Brady spent the last year and a half living in Melbourne Australia, Ft. Lauderdale Florida, and random ports around the Caribbean meandering between rolling burritos and crewing on super yachts.  Yep, his life is not exactly what one would call very tough but he did work hard to save up money to continue sailing around the world.

When not sailing, diving or fishing Brady enjoys eating, drinking Scotch, and sleeping.  Life is good and he’s psyched about experiencing Asia this season!

Josje Maxime Leyten (AKA YOOshers, Josjerama, Raminator, Josjematrix, Rama, Kiwi)

Josje brings out the gypsy pirate in all of us!  She was born on June 10th 1993 in Christchurch, New Zealand. Although she has a sweet as Kiwi accent and was born and raised in Kiwi-Land her heritage is 100% Dutch.

Josje is super creative, organized ,and artistic.  She is able to see the beauty in everything and has a very spiritual light to her.

In Feburary of 2011 Christchurch was struck by a terrible Earthquake that destroyed much of the city and Josje’s place of work.  Losing her job and just finishing high school Josje took a chance and decided to go sailing with her aunt and uncle.  Never sailing before, Josje jumped on board S/V Drifter in Opua, New Zealand and sailed to Fiji.

After completing the passage and spending some time in Fiji she ran into the unruly crew of Delos in Musket Cove, Fiji.  All it took was one night and she jumped ship to call Delos home.  Josje is naturally at home on the Ocean and in the sun….Especially if their is some chocolate or Salt and Vinegar chips within reach. She has really grown into an amazing sailor the past few years and is looking forward to the adventures ahead.

Karin has been a part of Delos’ life for two years now, visiting whenever she got the chance from her busy university life in Melbourne. Now she has completed her landscape architecture degree, she’s joined the Delos team full time for this season and beyond!

Born and raised in Sweden, Karin also spent a few years in London before moving to Australia, so she contributes wonderfully to the combination of cultures and accents on board.

Even though she’s used to living in the snow while chewing on smoked reindeer heart, she really adapts to the sailing lifestyle and gets into the spirit of things. A very keen sailor with many talents and skills; she’s swift in the kitchen, gets artsy and crafty with it and enjoys taking small naps every now and then. She’s a great asset to the team, her easy-going nature very much loves the boat bikini lifestyle.

  2. Hey, just came accross your blog... thought I'd start from the beginning and wow what an epic adventure guys! My wife and I are still wondering "where is Erin now"? We have a Dehler 39 and were wondering if you felt that a boat of 40ft overall and weighing 18K lbs would be good enough for the trip... she is solid and gets an "A" classification from Loyds. and our last question... "What happened to Erin" .... we thought she was a great crew member in the video's and blog entries! Wishing Delos and current crew fair winds and following seas!

    1. Hey S\V Manana! Thanks for checking out the blog and reading about our travels. It's been a blast to share the adventure with our friends and family, and more fun than we expected to write and take videos\photos.

I've met a few people on boats in the 20 foot range, but most by far are in 30 and 40 foot ranges. Most importantly if you feel she is safe and seaworthy and you have confidence in your ability to handle her then she is the perfect boat!

Erin sailed to New Zealand on Delos and then picked up a crew position on a super yacht and sailed back to California from Auckland, so she ended up completing two Pacific Crossings which is a pretty sweet accomplishment.

Best of luck, and hope to see you out there!

  4. It so amazing all those stories of you guys. I would love tot do the same as all of you. After high school in Holland I left to New Zealand and enjoyed traveling there too much. So it's awesome to read what Josje actually had done. Also Dutch, New Zealand andd christchurch is nice again I think. whatever. yoou're just enjoying sailing and traveling now. Now I'm back to university in Amsterdam but I'm more dreaming about traveling the world with a sailingyacht than studying here in Holland. Just don''t know how to start a life like you guys.
    Enjoy guys!!!!

  5. So me and my girlfriend have been watching all of your uploads and were curious how you all met karin, Josje, and Nina? In one of the videos I think you said you met them in the solomon islands or something. We are just curious, also do you have any videos from the solomons?

    Replies
    1. Hey Ian! So we all met while out sailing! We were anchored in a nice quiet place in Tonga and heard a raging party on another boat in the anchorage. Of course we went to investigate and met Nina who had chartered a cat for a 10 day trip. We hit it off and met up in Auckland when we sailed to New Zealand. She now comes to sail on Delos whenever she has time off work.

While in New Zealand we met Karin and her girlfriends on a backpacking trip from Australia. We convinced them to take a weekend trip on Delos and the rest is history :)

Then we were sailing in Fiji and met Josje who was sailing on her aunt and uncles boat. After a few weeks of hanging out she jumped ship onto Delos.....

Unfortunately we really don't have any good footage of the Solomon's. For some reason we got out of the video mode during this time and were mostly doing stills. Really kicking myself for this as there as some AWESOME stuff there but oh well, we can always go back I suppose.

Thanks so much for watching and leaving the comment!

  6. Hey Guys- just tripped across your blog/FB page, and as today's my first back to work after taking the month of July off to crew on a boat in the Vic-Maui yacht race (Victoria,BC to Maui, HI) I'm struggling to think of anything but sailing- you're living my dream, and I want it back! I noticed Delos is registered in Seattle- do you get back to the NW much? I'd love a chance to buy you a round and pick your brain on funding ideas for this grand lifestyle. Fair Winds!

    1. Hey Dennis!

Oh so very cool! In Seattle I raced on VooDoo Child, which is owned by Brian Duchin. I never got to to the Vic-Maui but I did do a delivery the other way, back to Seattle. It was an awesome sail! So I haven't been back to Seattle in a while but If I ever wander through there I would love to share a cold one with you. I did write a blog post about how we fund this crazy venture. If you're got some spare time maybe check out http://svdelos.blogspot.com/2013/12/how-do-we-afford-to-sail-part-1by-brian.html and http://svdelos.blogspot.com/2013/12/how-do-we-afford-to-sail-part-2-by-brian.html .

  7. My guilty pleasure, you guys are. I stumbled across your later videos on YouTube, and was so hooked dreaming about circumnavigating, I had to go back and start from #1. It's been a thrilling ride. Learning about distant locales, seeing the cruising life unfold, getting to know the personalities on board...it's all been a wonderful experience. Thank God my wife doesn't like sailing because I'd quit my job as a chemist and sell everything to follow in your wake. In the meantime, I have to make due with my Catalina 22 on Lake Nockamixon, which still brings me pleasure beyond most everything else. I wish you guys lots of luck and good fortrune. And know that there are a million people like me, dreaming they could one of you. "To be alive is not the same as really living."

    2. Hello Brian and Crew! Hope this short note finds you in good health and spirits. Your piece about "...selling it all and whittling it down to a car load of stuff..." really made me think about my own life, and the upcoming Xmas season when most people load on an ever increasing amount of material things. It's hard to tell people that I don't want any more stuff. Maybe a few consumables. I've been on a tear to de-stuff my life, and reading your piece was that extra little push to continue. Hey, I'm going to send you guys a little love to help you on your journey. Also, I was wondering how to get my hands on a Delos T-shirt. Can you help me?

    3. Hey Hans! Glad you liked the blog and you can relate to it! Your right, it is really hard sometimes to tell people you don't want them to buy you "things" this time of year. Its also hard not to fall into buying things for yourself haha. Thanks for wanting to send us some love! The best way to do it would be to head to www.patreon.com/svdelos . You can even get a T-shirt by supporting us there!

  8. I could read your blogs over and over. Your adventure has set me off on the idea of buy a small sailboat and start by sailing locally along the coast of NJ and may througth the C&D Canal to the Chesapeake bay. Funny thing...one the boats I have been considering is a Catalina 22. Didn't know that was your first until reading it here.

  22. Isn't tell you how much I've enjoyed your adventures on YouTube, and I'm looking forward to seeing how things go as you sail to South Africa. Sorry to hear that Josje moved back home - she always had a cheerful energy that really charmed me. I can't get Onetox's "Ramukanji" out of my head, so I moved it to my iPad and I was playing it this past weekend when I was sailing my Newport 30 on Lake Ontario. It's funny, the winds were getting up there and getting pretty gusty, with the waves getting up, and I was thinking on you guys getting hammered by huge waves in the latest episode - I sucked it up, reefed the Genoa and main and kept going. You're having a good influence on me! Good luck!

  28. Greetings Delos Captain and Crew! Catching up on your odyssey via youtube. I live in the Seattle area and have just started a much delayed
(30 year Career). Grew up in souther cal, surfing for several years. Served in the Navy on an aircraft carrier and was awestruck at the ocean beyond my local surf spot. Retired relatively early (57). Ive heeded the call I heard all too long ago, and have begun my sailing education. Thought you might enjoy another Seattle guy is seizing the sailing mindset. First learned at south lake union on amazing museum pieces call Blanchard Jr Runabouts built on lake union in the late 30's and early 40's. Recently took the small boat classes at Renton sailing center. Bought an RS quest dinghy to sail lake Washington. Dennis Conner once said "big boats get the glory small boats make the sailor". Next year off to ASA Tacoma for keel boats, coastal navigation, and bareboat qualifications. Thinking a Gemini cat might be in our future in the BVI's. Im done with the 37 degree rainy winter days. Thanks for posting your adventures. They inspire me to pursue my own sailing pedigree and the adventure they may bring my wife and I. Seattle Mark

  29. I just turned 70, raised 3 kids and now 5 grand kids. If I had to do life over living your adventureous life would be a hard choice. Is lived vicariously through your YouTube videos and enjoyed every one: learning techniques of the electronics, diving equipment, selecting diving locations, sailing, food preparations, food storage and more. I liken it to the preparations needed for space travel. Please keep your quest alive. Your fans, no matter their age, are enjoying your voyages. I have a recommendation and a question. Pepper your videos with more sailing techniques, new crew biographies and equipment concerns and how you solve them. My question has to do with security and pirates. How is your equipment secures and is their concerns about piracy ever?

  31. Dear Brian, Karin and nugget. This is Eladio from a Venezuela but living in Japan for over 20 years, I admire you and look up to you because your accomplishments and for fulfilling your dreams and many more to come imagine. I wanted to ask you if starting to think of embarking on a project like yours to sail around the world at my age of 44 is possible, I have made my living in the ERP and SW development business but I would like very much to really explore other options like sailing is a huge life change for me and I don’t know if it’s even possible. These days my age is what concerns me the most, so just wanted to humbly ask about your thoughts.
