A special thanks to Teddy from Sail Loot who took time out of his day to do a Podcast for us! It was a lot of fun and turned out great! We discuss the history of S/V Delos, how we set sail, and how how we have made it happen financially before the normal retirement age!
Listen above, or check out the details at the Sail Loot site! You can also DOWNLOAD the podcast.
Hi Brian,
ReplyDeleteI am taking a break between packing boxes and selling our house catching up on some fun reading. Next we will ready Cream Puff as we start our cruising adventure. What hull number is Delos? Cream Puff is also a 2000 model, hull number #275. Perhaps we were factory neighbors :)
Best wishes to all aboard Delos,
Mark

Hey Mark! Nice, sounds like you're right on track there! Oh I remember those days so well :) So Delos is hull #303, so yes very close indeed!

awsome
ReplyDeleteAwesome listen to Brian. This really did answer a bunch of questions that either I never thought of asking or just quietly wondered about! Planning to attend the boat show while in Lauderdale? If you are in Miami and want to be treated to a round of drinks let me know, would love hanging out with you and the family!
ReplyDeleteHey Jonathan! Wow cool, so glad to hear you enjoyed it. Boat show!!! Oh man, if we can make that I'm in. We'll just have to see about that :)
DeleteI like the part about 5 min from the end where Karin brings up giving and getting positivity.
ReplyDeleteYea, thanks so much for that. We've learned a few things about the world and people so far, and by far this really stands out. Or of course maybe we've just been reading too much Wayne Dyer :) J/K!

Great interview Brian, very informative. Turns out I've heard of you through a mutual friend of your brother. My friend Lindsay worked with him at Sea Base in Islamorada and I worked with her at the state park in Key Largo. Anyway, happy to have found your blog and videos.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, very cool! I'm pretty sure I met Lindsay when me and Brady were down there on a visit a few years ago to the Sea Base. We went out on the little Hobie Cat, got some lobster, had a great party, and even went diving on a wreck that I can't remember the name. It was a blast :) Anyway thanks so much for checking out the podcast, videos, and blog. Really happy to hear you enjoyed it!

Hey Brian,
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to take a minute to thank you guys for the great videos and blogposts. I enjoy watching and reading every minute of them, and can't wait to see the new material you guys will be putting online. You guys have given me the extra motivation to get out and actually start on my dream of sailing the world. I recently came up with a two year plan (still finishing) that will hopefully get me out on the water soon. I did have one question for you: what was it like sailing your 52' Delos from Seattle to Mexico all by yourself? From the interview, it had sounded like you made this trip solo. From what I have seen online, everyone says that the biggest boat you should sail by yourself is about a 35'. I was just curious about your opinion on this topic. Also, what equipment do you recommend to help sailing by yourself. I am very new to the sailing world, and am still trying to figure out the whole 2 year plan. Thank you for all your help and information, and I look forward to seeing you guys online in the near future!!!
Eric
Hey Eric! That's awesome man, so happy to hear you have the dream to go sailing :) So there were actually 6 of us on the passage from Seattle to California. I was really nervous about the first offshore passage with me in the captain's seat, so asked a bunch of my friends from a race boat I crewed on to join. It turned out to be 3 knots of breeze for the entire trip and a complete motorboat ride. Oh well.....
DeleteI'm really not sure about the boat size, I've been on 39' boats that needed 6 people to sail, and 50' boat sthat can be single handed. I think it depends more on the rigging of the boat, how you have it set up, and your confidence in your ability to handle situations if "shit starts to get real". Delos can be sailed with one person because of the electric winches, furlers, etc. but I wouldn't want to be alone if something went wrong and we dropped a sail overboard or something.....
Fair Winds, and wishing you all the best as you pursue this awesome dream :)
